The Shonk is a holistic music journalism and creative outlet in Newport, South Wales. Shonkphonics records is a small, self-funded DIY label for a handful of outsider artists and performers who use The Shonk HQ rehersal space, also in Newport.

The Shonk has been home to music reviews, contributed by its journalists; Duke of Earl, Arbiter Titan, LadyMidday, SGJ and more since 2018.

Shonkphonics are proud to strive to keep as much of the ‘business’ in house as possible…

This website is hosted on The Shonk’s very own home server, the CDs we produce for our bands are copied, printed, cloned and packaged at home. The only thing we order in are the printed covers for the cases, the inkjet printer doesn’t have what it takes and I’m hopeless at cutting out, we use a local printer based in Newport.

Shonk HQ Rehersal Space…

Shonk HQ offers low cost rehersal times to bands looking for somewhere to jam out and rehearse without worrying about overheads. Commerce stifles creativity and we are here to help! The space is available for £10 an hour or for weekday sessions of 10am-6pm for £60. This includes full backline, use of equipment.

The space is suitable for drummers looking to play along, we have a housekit and headphone amplification, the mixer supports bluetooth and its easy to connect your phone.

Producers looking to record, it’s a great space for larger bands and low costs, there’s an 8-channel interface that’s micc’ed ready to go, otherwise bring your own gear and make use of the space, we have two rooms out-back suitable for isolation and vocal recording.

We have green-screen facilities on hand as well as various filming and disco lights. The space comprises 25 square metres in total.

All the label’s music is available to hear / purchase through our Bandcamp: shonkphonics.bandcamp.com

The Shonk hosts gigs throughout the year, often in The Pit, on Newport High Street.
