Ta Matia Malaka (The soft eyes) is a two-piece no-wave band from Newport, South Wales. Focused on layering guitar loops, idiosyncacies and energies into an ever thickening prescription. Dialled back drums like failing machinery carry across the waves, breaking through, melding until it’s not possible to tell what is what.
A strictly improvisational band, Matia Malaka are to be enjoyed raw and in the moment, endured maybe.
In 2025 TMM performed a 1.5hr improvised piece over a collage film assembled by band member Steven George Jones. The piece was loosely themed on the greek tragedy, Oedipus. The film was projected onto the drummer and shown on a large television. Two karaoke machines were provided to the audience along with programmes which featured words from the script to the Oedipus play. Audience members were invited to perform lines from the play as they saw fit.
